Haiti needs help

JANUARY 15, 2010 BY cancansoo IN Happenings

Ever since the devastating earthquake hit, a bunch of us here were trying to figure out the best way to make donations towards the relief efforts in Haiti.  There are many international, well-known organizations to support but we also found a few smaller groups that have the potential to do just as much good now and in the long-run.  So, we thought we'd share what we found.

Third World Awareness (www.twawareness.org) - 100% of all proceeds go directly towards their projects in Haiti.

Plan Canada (www.plancanada.ca) - from January 12 to Feburary 12, 2010, the Canadian government will match all contributions made to the Haitian relief effort.

Hope for Haiti (www.hopeforhaiti.com) - 95 cents of every dollar donated goes directly towards their ongoing efforts in Haiti as well as their current relief operation.

Help Haiti Now (www.helphaitinow.org) - donations go towards helping displaced Haitians north of Port-au-Prince in the Montrouis area.

The National Council's Project Helping Hands (www.thenationalcouncil.org/cs/project_helping_hands) - many mental health needs emerge in the aftermath of traumatic disasters and donations will go towards hiring treatment staff and setting up emergency outreach offices as well as purchasing medications and emergency equipment to help those affected.

These are all government-registered organizations.
